We are on the move again! Anyone that knows us understands we usually get the “7 year itch” when it comes to owning the same home. So after 8 years at our previous house, we knew we were overdue and it was time to start our search for a new place to call home again.  We did just about everything we could do as far as renovations in our previous home too so we were up for a new challenge! After an exhaustive search for a couple of months over the summer and fall, we finally ended up finding a beautiful property in one of our favourite areas of south Burlington (we were looking to be near the lake) that we knew had a ton of potential.  So we signed the deal, moved from our Oakville home just before Christmas and we are now renting while our complete renovation takes place.

As you can see from some of the pics below, the house had character, but is not to our taste and the finishes are a bit outdated.  We are looking to make this home a very light and bright home and we are doing everything we can as far as finishes, tearing down walls and utilizing the brightest areas of the house (where lots of light comes in from the skylights and plentiful windows from the south facing yard) for our new kitchen and family room.

The previous homeowner had their kitchen at the front of the home as well as a sun room at the back and an extra bedroom and kitchenette on the main floor. Not to mention a 3 piece powder room with a shower.  Obviously it was done to work for their extended family but when you own a home, it needs to work for your family’s lifestyle.

So we are now relocating the kitchen to the back of the home which will be open to the family room, we’re turning the old kitchen into both an office and will put up a wall and create a main floor mudroom/laundry room.  The dining room will remain in the same spot at the front of the house but it will now be connected from the kitchen via a butler’s pantry.

We felt the space on the second floor was a little tight as well so we are putting an addition over the garage which will become our new master bedroom.  The old master bedroom will become our new master bathroom and the old master bathroom will become our new walk in closet complete with an island.

We enlisted the help of Alison Strickland of Strickland Mateljan Architects to help with the design of our new home and they’ve been wonderful to work with. http://www.smda.ca  If you’re into this type of thing, feel free to peruse through our new plans – link below:
